Dear Friends,

In November we celebrated Families. We learned healthy eating habits as we prepared for our Fruit Share Bowl in honor of remembering the First Thanksgiving. We shared what makes our families unique and special to each of us.

In December we will explore these unit questions in our All About Us –Where we Live Unit: Where do I live? Where do my family members live? Where do people and animals live? What types of homes do the people in my city (NYC) live in? How do people and animals make homes? We will be creating unique Gingerbread Houses (D5SS:2d). We will welcome the winter season.

As part of our study of structures and in honor of the Holiday Celebrations, we will be making Gingerbread Houses. We will use the inspiration of the artist Hundertwasser.

Our curriculum is aligned to NYS Common Core Domains, which includes:

  1. Approaches to Learning 2. Physical Development 3.Social and Emotional Development
  2. Communication, Language and Literacy 5.Cognition and Knowledge of the World.

Here are some key vocabulary words we will be using throughout this unit:

address, neighborhood, roads, street, burrow, habitat, hibernate, hive nest, pet, house, architect, backyard, blueprints, building, builder, construction, exit, fire escape, floor plans.

Children will use small sticks and play dough to build three dimensional structures. PK.CKW.3 (Social Studies):

Children create art works with paint and blunt kitchen tools. (Technology): Explores and uses various types of tools appropriately.
